Obituary

Maricela Valdez Olague, 64, of Glendora, CA, passed away on December 19, 2024 after a two-month health battle following a splenic artery aneurysm on October 15, 2024 and ultimately succumbing to week-long seizures and declined in neurological and respiratory function. Maricela was born on October 31, 1960 to Luis and Aurora Valdez in Sugar Land, Texas. Shortly after she was born, her family moved to Los Angeles, CA where she grew up and graduated from Fairfax High School in 1979 where she was a Varsity Cheerleader and enjoyed hanging out with her friends. After graduating high school she attended East Los Angeles College for a few years while working at the Metropolitan Movie Theaters where she met many lifelong friends. In 1987, she began her career at the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier in Downey, CA. In the late 1980s Maricela met her future husband, Enrique Olague, while out one night doing what she loved, dancing to 80s electric music. Maricela and Enrique went on to marry on September 16, 1989 in Los Angeles, CA. She gave birth to their first child, Luis Olague, in June of 1990, followed by the birth of their daughter, Yanira Olague (Haston), in March of 1993. Maricela was a caring, selfless, joyful, loving women with a huge heart and a bit of sass. She loved planning family events and being with her family and friends especially when music and dancing was involved. Most of all she loved her four grandchildren more than anything; although none of them called her Abuelita like she wanted, she settled on Grandma. Luis Adrian Olague (8), Eliana Lucia Olague (5), Noah Vincent Haston (3), and Elijah Henry Haston (1) - were Maricela's favorite people in the world. She loved to watch them play, sing, and do goofy things that always brought out her loud infectious laugh. Maricela was preceded in death by her parents Luis and Aurora Valdez, her older brother Frank Valdez, and her in-laws, Petronilo and Elena Olague. She is survived by her husband Enrique Olague, her son Luis Olague and his fiancé Nancy Rodriguez, her daughter Yanira Haston and her husband Nathan Haston, her grandchildren Luis A. Olague (age 8), Eliana Olague (age 5), Noah Haston (age 3) and Elijah Haston (age 1), her siblings Jose Luis Valdez, Oscar Valdez, Mary Miranda, Aurora Cortez and Olga Guzman, as well as many brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews. The family requests that colorful items are worn in memory of Maricela. She loved all things bright in color, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Dallas Cowboys.
