Oscar Veliz Sepulveda

September 3, 1939 –

Oscar Veliz Sepulveda was born on September 3, 1939, in Mexico, the beloved son of Ramón Lorenzo Sepulveda de la Garza and Herminda Veliz Chapa. He was one of seven children and held a special place in his family as the second-youngest sibling. His brothers and sisters—Blanca, Ramón, Magda, Alejandro, Diamantina, and the youngest, Hortancia—shared a bond rooted in tradition, strength, and love.

From a young age, Oscar showed a quiet determination and a dream for something greater. In the 1960s, he made a bold and courageous decision that would shape the future of his family for generations to come: he immigrated to the United States in search of a better life. Starting out in Los Angeles, he began with humble beginnings as a dishwasher. But through hard work, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, he steadily climbed the ranks of the hotel industry.

Over the years, Oscar became a respected manager at some of the most iconic hotels in the world, including the historic Ambassador Hotel and the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles. Later, he played a role in the opening of the Mirage in Las Vegas and ultimately retired with pride from Caesars Palace.

Oscar had a natural gift for hospitality—not just in his professional life, but in his personality. He was known for the perks that came with his work—stories of luxurious hotels, fine meals, and unforgettable experiences that he generously shared with friends and family. He never forgot his roots, often sending financial support back home to help his parents and relatives in Mexico. He lived a life of generosity, humility, and deep familial loyalty. 

Family was always at the center of Oscar’s life. He was the proud father of five children—four daughters and one son—as well as three grandchildren, Daniel, Emma, and Matthew, and two great-grandchildren, Rilee and Tylor. His first two daughters, Blanca Pat Sepulveda and Marilyn Sepulveda, were from his first partner. In 1969, he married Gertrudis Esther Sepulveda in Monterrey, Mexico, and together they raised three more children: Oscar, Adriana, and Carolina.

Oscar had a deep love for cooking and barbequing. He took great joy in preparing meals for others, and you could often find him manning the grill at family gatherings, proudly sharing his food with a smile. And when the music started, Oscar was never far from the dance floor. At family parties and weddings, you could always count on him to be dancing—full of energy, joy, and charisma, adding life to every celebration.

Oscar Veliz Sepulveda was a man of quiet strength, humility, and profound responsibility. He never sought attention, but his actions spoke louder than words—whether through his hard work, his devotion to his family, or his ability to create opportunity where there once was none. His story is one of courage, perseverance, and enduring love—a legacy that lives on in the hearts of his children and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
